Most leaders are not very good at coaching or developing others to become leaders.   However this does not mean that leadership training, coaching and mentoring should be abandoned.

potential leadersCreating ‘tomorrow’s leaders is of vital importance if we are to develop sustainability in our organizations.  However there is another factor we have to take into account.  A key factor in creating motivation in our people within the organization is to engender the feeling on their part that they are growing as individuals. There is no better way of achieving this than through a structured leadership development processes, using as wide a range of development processes as possible. Workshops, work exchanges, on-line development, encounters, shadowing exercises and so forth can offer a very wide range of experience.

In fact one leading organization, The Industrial Society, identified some years ago that there were well over forty ways of developing individuals, most of these ways being appropriate for leadership development. By developing our future leaders through training programmes, coaching by line managers and outside parties and providing mentoring opportunities of all types we can create highly effective leaders for the future.  And people want to feel they are growing as individuals. If they do not feel that they are moving forwards they are increasingly likely to seek opportunities elsewhere.
